Carbon Ignition in Type Ia Supernovae: An Analytic Model
نویسنده
چکیده
The observable properties of a Type Ia supernova are sensitive to how the nuclear runaway ignites in a Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf at a single point at its center, off-center, or at multiple points and times. We present a simple analytic model for the runaway based upon a combination of stellar mixing-length theory and recent advances in understanding RayleighBenard convection. The convective flow just prior to runaway is likely to have a strong dipolar component, though higher multipoles may contribute appreciably at the very high Rayleigh number (10) appropriate to the white dwarf core. A likely outcome is multi-point ignition with an exponentially increasing number of ignition points during the few tenths of a second that it takes the runaway to develop. The first sparks ignite approximately 150 200 km off center, followed by ignition at smaller radii. Rotation may be important to break the dipole asymmetry of the ignition and give a healthy explosion. Subject headings: Supernovae, hydrodynamics

Binary Evolution of Type Ia Supernovae
Observations of Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) combined with modeling of dynamics, light curves and spectra continue to point to the difficult conclusion that SN Ia result from degenerate ignition in a carbon/oxygen white dwarf of the Chandrasekhar mass. Such a model accounts well for the “normal” SN Ia and for the observed dispersion exemplified by the light curve amplitude-shape relation. The cri...

In the framework of the Chandrasekhar-mass deflagration model for Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), a persisting free parameter is the initial morphology of the flame front, which is linked to the ignition process in the progenitor white dwarf. Previous analytical models indicate that the thermal runaway is driven by temperature perturbations (“bubbles”) that develop in the white dwarf’s convective ...

We investigate the consequences of a new phenomenological model prediction of strongly reduced low-energy astrophysical S-factors for carbon and oxygen fusion reactions on stellar burning and nucleosynthesis. The new model drastically reduces the reaction rates in stellar matter at temperatures T < ∼ (3–10) × 108 K, especially at densities ρ >∼ 109 g cm−3, in a strongly screened or even pycnonu...

Accreting carbon-oxygen white dwarfs approaching the Chandrasekhar mass may provide a substantial fraction of Type Ia supernovae. The hydrodynamics of nuclear burning in these models remains uncertain, but all current models are characterized by an initial period of slow, nearly laminar Ñame propagation at a well-known conductive speed. For cold white dwarfs and slow accretion, the density at t...

The details of ignition of Type Ia supernovae remain fuzzy, despite the importance of this input for any large-scale model of the final explosion. Here, we begin a process of understanding the ignition of these hotspots by examining the burning of one zone of material, and then investigate the ignition of a detonation due to rapid heating at single point. We numerically measure the ignition del...
